Terrys’ Birthday Guitar Build and Custom Cab Project

“1966 Special”
Starting with a 2004 Squire Telecaster, I decided to upgrade it to a replica of Terry’s go to guitar. The ’62 Telecaster was modified by Terry to give it both a Tele (cutting) and Gibson (fat) sound. My guitar specialist friend Paul , did the work. Enjoy! Click on the pics>

Squire standard Telecaster in Creme with Maple fingerboard
Reverse the control plate
Make hole for alnicko humbucker
Drill holes and insert string butt grommets
Remove all the electronics and rout the pickup recesses
Cut bridge pickup plate into two pieces and drill holes for strings
Route the pickup recesses and install copper shielding

Rewire and reverse control plate
Hand cut bone nut installed

From Dan: Decided to keep the pickguard and not go for the Strat tremolo system. Also, keep it virgin with regards to the stickers, a la Terry 1973 (see Terry pic above)

Terry Kath custom cab project:

I have been working on a project for the last 6 months and so far its coming out pretty well. The intrigue of Terrys custom speaker cabinet got the best of me. I have heard some people think it was made in this shape for various reasons. However to me, it reminded me of the old Victrola Horn designs. Either way, it is nothing less than genius that Terry would design his personal cab this way. And after building it, I am even more in awe of his creative mind! – Nick Charles

Bonus: “This is a picture of Terrys stage equipment, or at least some of it. The Strat and the Tele, I built to what I consider TK specs. The two knight heads, the Acoustic Control 150 amps, Gibson LP, Italian Jen cry baby and Phaser…are all original to the era. And I threw in the red carpet to replicate what I saw in concerts.”  Nick
